This journey of discovery begins from an ancient rough-hewn seat in the natural
amphitheater of the oldest continuous parliament in the world and ends at the site
of the geyser all others are named for.
Enjoy fertile green valleys, sweeping mountain ranges with crashing waterfalls, renowned
salmon fishing rivers and the rugged beauty of the fjords. Old towns en route, folk
museums, agricultural and commercial traditions and religious sites will pique your
interest in the communitys ability to harmonize with the power of natures
forces. Akureyri, the capital of Northern Iceland, welcomes you to her nightlife and
cultural diversions.
You will marvel at the volcanic formations, jet streams, boiling lava pits and underground
caves that inspired visions of the supernatural among the early race of poet warriors.
Lake Myvatn is an area both bizarre and fertile. It has crater pools for swimming,
lava caves, shores and cliffs bursting with birdlife. There is also an excursion to
Borgarfjördur Eystri-an interplay of color in basalt and rhyolite. Numerous waterfalls
descend from peaks of thunderous heights to veils cascading over tremendous expanse or
bursting forth from beneath a lava field. The rugged northern land is marked by a
magnificent fjordside route to the Vatnajokull glacier, the largest in Europe, draped atop
an active volcano which last erupted in 1998. Dont miss the opportunity to take the
optional lagoon trip - face to face with eerily floating icebergs that are crackling with
the weight of their formation.
